Mindfulness in Counseling
Cincinnati, Ohio
Research has shown us powerful changes that can come from a mindfulness practice. Things like: Feeling more in control of our thoughts, emotions and behaviors, Improved ability to manage stress, Decreased anxiety, and Feeling more confident in the face of uncertainty.
Studies have also shown us that the activity levels in the fear center in our brain (ie. our Amygdala) actually decreases with a regular mindfulness practice. Without getting too sciencey here, this simply means that we feel less anxious when we practice mindfulness regularly. Pretty cool, right? Mindfulness simply means to be in the present moment with a nonjudgemental curiosity. Seeing as depression is typically described as living in the past and anxiety is typically seen as living in the future, a mindfulness practice can help us to be free of both anxiety and depression as we focus on the here and now.
Not only that, but Mindfulness also helps us to feel more in control of ourselves by increasing our self-awareness. As Mindfulness is a practice of being aware of the present moment, we not only become aware of what is happening around us, but what is happening within us as well.
This increasing self-awareness impacts how we interact with our world and how we deal with stressors. This means that a simple mindfulness practice has the power to improve stress management skills, help us break old habits, improve our relationships and even meet our goals.
